Hello! I am an editor, cover designer, and "whatever-elser" (which usually means whatever Ley tells me to do) for AspenHouse Publishing.
Writing has always been a hobby of mine. For as long as I can remember, I've been creating stories in my head. My parents used to have to hold my hand walking through stores so I wouldn't walk into things because I was living in my own world all the time. As I grew, and developed writing skills, I started to put those stories down on paper.
My focus for both writing and editing has always been in fantasy. As you could probably extrapolate from my daydreaming story, I have always loved magical worlds. One thing I look for when editing fantasy is to make sure the magic system adds depth to a story, rather than adding consfusion.
I studied Communications in college, with the goal of going into news writing. That really messed with my fiction writing, but it also helped me hone the skill of cutting out fluff words. I guess that's why I am an editor.
During that time, I also studied graphic design. I use that knowledge in designing book covers for self-published authors. Too often, self-published books have bland or clashing covers that drive away readers rather than attract them. Despite the adage, people really do judge a book by its cover.
The goal in starting this podcast was to help people get to writing. I talk to a lot of people who say they want to write a book, but they're either unsure about how to start, how to write, or how to publish. This podcast will help answer all those questions and encourage anyone to just write. As Ley says, writing a book does nothing but good for the author, even if it's never published.
I will be drawing a lot of inspiration during the creation of this podcast from my favorite author: Brandon Sanderson. Don't be surprised if I mention him in almost every episode.
