Notetaking: Crafting Fight Scenes and Fighters

YouTube Video: Writing Combat

It's not easy to write a fight. Whether you're crafting a battle between two armies or a hand-to-hand fight between two characters, it's a complicated process. That's made even worse if you aren't familiar with any fighting style. YouTube can help some, but unless you know the basic psychology of a fighter and elements of physiology, it's easy to sound like you don't know what you're doing.

Ley Esses, trained in San Soo, talked about writing fights at our 2022 Virtual Writing Retreat. She talks first about what goes on in a fighters mind, gets into how to choose weapons and fighting styles, and then breaks down how to write a fight scene. She includes her strategy of charting it out so you can keep track of each person, weapon, and even the environment.
