Writer's Retreat: Character Design

Good characters will make or break a book. It can be set in an amazing world and have a the best plot ever, but if the characters are flat, your book will be too. That's why it's important to design your characters in both word and action.

Each character should have a unique voice. The reader should be able to tell who's talking by what they say, not just by the dialogue tag.

What a character does, rather than says, is often just as telling when it comes to a well-designed character.

Ley Esses breaks down how to make your characters shine in this presentation, given at the 2019 AspenHouse Writer's Retreat. Below is a copy of the slideshow which you can download to follow along with the audio recording.
